Why do you want to study theology?

Why, why, why?

Why people always want to know the “whys”?

The reason is simple: because everything has a reason, a motive, a “why”.

So, if you don’t mind, we want to ask you, “Why do you want to study theology”.

Let me help you to answer this question by listing some known reasons why people  choose to study theology. You may find your reason among these ones.

I can think of several reasons why people want to study theology:

1. People want to study theology because they are curious.

Many people are simply curious about and they just want to know what kind of thing theology is. This is understandable,  as curiosity is a great drive in life and responsible for many discoveries in all fields of life. However, curiosity may not be enough to keep somebody studying theology. When they get a basic understanding of what is theology, they may give themselves for satisfied and go after the next interesting thing that call their attention. So theology becomes only a passing interest in their lives, not really a important thing.

2. People want to study theology because they don’t know God .

This also is a good and very common reason why people want to study theology. They think that knowing theology they can come to know God. In fact, it might be that the knowledge that theology gives you will lead you to know God, but one should not think that it is something automatic. Theology is about God, but it may be utterly incapable of giving you real knowledge about God, because theology is a discipline, while knowing God is an experience and only can be done in the spiritual realm, not only through intellectual acquirements about God.

3. People want to study theology because they already know God.

In my opinion, this is the best reason why you should study theology. If you already know who God is and have a personal relationship with him, it will be natural that you want to know always more about him. Theology, as a discipline,  is not the only way to know more about God, but it is one of the best way to do so. When you want to study theology to know more about God, theology will be not only a discipline for you, but it will be part of your life. In fact you, then, are not only studying theology, but “making” theology. Because to know God, is theology in the making.

Have you find your reason why you want to study theology? Other reasons exist, but those are some that I could think of in the moment. If you have other reason why you would like to study theology, let us know posting a comment to this post. Thank you.

I am pastoring a church in South Africa, in one of the townships in Gauteng province for the past ten years. AS the church grows, the resposibilities grow together with it. In ministry, it not only pulpit teaching, but administration is the key for the success of the church,.and remember, knowledge is the principal key for the church to mature.
